The Sidecar Residence was created in conjunction with the West Salem Modern Development. The house was organized around a side yard directly accessible from the main living spaces. This space provides a large outdoor room for gathering and focal point for views from the interior. The neighborhood’s front porches are referenced in the street facing facade with large openings oriented toward the neighborhood park and side yard. Board formed concrete walls and cypress fencing provide privacy from the interior spaces while maintain visual connectivity to the streetscape. The placement of the large openings provides natural light throughout the space while focusing views on the neighborhood park and limiting those of adjacent homes. The brick masonry veneer reflects the context of surrounding homes and the cypress wood siding is native to North Carolina. The hot rolled steel metal panels were fabricated by STITCH design shop and reflect the natural beauty of the metal and the blue green hues.
